About VerteXia
Vertexia is a vector drawing and animation tool that runs right in your browser. It works on desktop and on your phone, and once the page has loaded you can keep working with no internet connection. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
Open it, sketch a character, pin the parts together, and watch it walk across the screen.
What it is
Vertexia is built for making cartoons and short animations from simple vector shapes. You draw the pieces, join them with pins, and set keyframes on a timeline. The app handles a lot of the tedious parts for you, like walking cycles, swinging tails and bending limbs, so you can spend your time on the actual scene.
What you can do with it
Draw
- Use a full set of vector drawing tools, including freehand with smoothing
- Group shapes into objects and edit the parts inside them
- Fill with solid colors or gradients, and add glow and shadow effects
- Trace over a reference image if you want to follow an existing sketch
Build characters
- Start from a ready made template: people (simple, tall, round, strong, muscular, elder), kids, dogs, cats, birds, spiders, beetles and even a dragon
- Reshape a template with sliders for things like head size, shoulders, arm and leg length, snout, tail and wings
- Give any color a top to bottom gradient
- Use the character creator to build your own from scratch, then save it to your library
Rig and pose
- Pin parts together so they rotate from the right spot
- Turn on IK handles so dragging a hand bends the whole arm
- Add tail physics to tails, ears, antennae and wings so they swing as the character moves
- Give an object several views, like front, side and back, and switch between them mid scene
- Draw extra shape frames for things like mouth shapes
Make it walk
- Mark hands and feet, then move a character left or right and it walks on its own
- Tune stride length, foot lift, hip bounce, lean and arm swing
- Many legged creatures step in groups, so the spider and the beetle each move the way you would expect
- Put things in a character's hand, like a prop or an object from your library
Animate
- Key any property on the timeline and Vertexia tweens between your keys
- Pick an easing for each key
- Use Auto key to start animating as soon as you move something
- Move the orange camera frame to pan, zoom and rotate the shot
- Split a longer project into chapters, each with its own layers, camera, timeline and audio
Add sound
- Import audio in almost any format your browser can read
- Clips are stored as lossless FLAC
- Drag clips between six tracks, mute a track, and set volume per clip
- Audio plays back with your animation and gets mixed into MP4 exports
Exporting your work
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
| PNG | Crop to your artwork with a margin, and set the size by the longest edge |
| GIF | Export any frame range through the camera |
| MP4 | Export a frame range with audio, or join all chapters into one video |
| .vertexia | Save the whole project, including trace image and audio |
| .vxpack | Share objects from your library as a pack |
Long videos are written to browser storage in small pieces while they render, so a big cartoon does not need to fit in memory.
Your library
Anything you make can be saved to your objects library and reused in any project in the same browser. Tap an item to drop it into your scene. You can also export a group of items as an asset pack, or import a pack someone else made.
Works on phone and desktop
The layout adjusts to your screen. On a phone, panels slide up as sheets, and you can swipe the timeline, tap frame numbers to jump around, and drag the playhead to scrub. On desktop you get keyboard shortcuts, zoom controls and a mouse friendly timeline.
Private by default
Your projects live in your own browser. Fonts and the MP4 encoder are bundled into the file, so nothing needs to be fetched from outside.
If you want cloud saves, Vertexia can connect to Synkrown Hub. You sign in, save projects to the cloud, and open them on another device.
Quick start
- Open Vertexia in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox
- Start a new project, or open the sample robot to see how things fit together
- Draw a few shapes, select them, and press Make object
- Set pin points where the parts join
- Turn on Auto key and move things around on the timeline
- Hit Export when you are happy with it
Built with
Vertexia uses mp4-muxer (MIT license) for video export and fonts from Fontsource (SIL Open Font License). Both licenses are included with the app.
